Port Howard is the largest settlement on West Falkland in the east of the island on an inlet of Falkland Sound. The Settlement, situated on the lower slopes of Mount Maria, is the centre of a 200,000 acre sheep farm of over 40,000 sheep. There are 20 permanent residents. Port Howard Lodge caters to tourists and is an ideal base from which to explore West Falkland.
The name “British Crown Colony”, shown on the old map below, was in use prior to 1 January 1983. In 2002 The name “British Overseas Territory” was introduced. The map belongs to Port Howard Lodge.
