Our final island destination in the Falklands was Carcass Island which lies north-west of West Falkland and south-east of the Jason Islands. Carcass Island Lodge is the original farmhouse; comfortable with great hosts and staff, it is an ideal place to stay. Magellanic penguins nest very close to the lodge and Striated caracaras, or Johnny Rooks as they are know in the islands, can be seen around the lodge. There are colonies of Gentoo and Magellanic penguins an hour’s walk to the south around the shore of the bay to Leopard Beach. It’s an unforgettable sight to sit on the rocks and watch the rafts of penguins break up and small groups of penguins surfing onto the beach.
